About Philip Philip was born in Preston, Lancashire, on May 30th 1955 and began acting at school aged 11 or 12. Philip says “Being an all Boys school, female roles were taken by the younger boys. It was the only way to get into the school play. So we had to grit out teeth against the inevitable ribbing and take the plunge, knowing we’d graduate to male roles eventually" Philip then went to Manchester University to study English and Drama. “I sometimes wish I’d gone to drama school” says Philip “but at 18 I didn’t have the courage of my convictions and till treated acting as a sideline, university provided more opportunities to act and gradually I began to realise that that was what gave me the greatest satisfaction. If I could make a living at it, all the better” Philip moved to London in 1977 and decided to give it a go for a couple of years, but spent most of his time doing temp work in offices and kitchens and wherever he could find it. Slowly the fringe work started to come in along with the occasional repertory theatre and TV bit parts. “I learned the job as I went along” he says “and am still learning now!. I’m lucky I suppose. My hobby is also the job. It pays reasonably well and takes me to places I’ve never been or have always wanted to see” Last Updated: July 2008 |
